Message from Head

Dr. A.B.M. Kamal Pasha
Associate Professor and Head

Greetings and welcome! Thank you for your interest in the Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management (ESDM) at Daffodil International University. The Department of ESDM started its journey from the Summer Semester-2010. I am highly pleased to convey all of you that the world is becoming more crowded, more consuming, and more connected. Growing populations and higher standards of living put increasing pressure on our environment. Environmental problems are just as real, just as controversial, and just as in need of intelligent solutions. The natural world is complex and human activity can have unexpected consequences that are hard to reverse. The study of how physical and biological processes maintain life, and how humans affect nature, requires a broad interdisciplinary perspective. Environmental problems and their associated solutions typically involve social, political and economic aspects which all the humans must aware of it. Our department makes collaboration with some government and nongovernment organizations in teaching and research. Frequently we arrange some practical oriented learning like environment and its problem related seminar and workshop as well as field visit with questionnaire survey and also study tour for the students so that they can get practical knowledge besides the theory.

About ESDM

The Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management was set up at Daffodil International University in 2012. This development in our country is especially important as Bangladesh is one of the countries most vulnerable to natural disaster and environmental pollution, because it’s geographic location and population expansion. The demand for environmental scientists and those trained in disaster management and pollution control are, therefore, acute and DIU feels strongly that the University must be part of the solution to environmental degradation and ensure sustainable development. We have responded to this by planning a permanent new green campus in Asulia outside Dhaka, a venture that has already won the University several awards for the most environmentally friendly campus in the country.Yet, we also wish to take on the challenge of restoring the degraded ecosystems caused already to our environment by training skilled and committed experts who can work with governmental and non-governmental agencies, by undertaking research to provide accurate data to help us to survey the extent of the damage and assess different strategies to overcome it, and to champion projects that aim at low-cost, sustainable remedies. Yet, flooding - the environmental disaster most commonly associated with Bangladesh - is only part of the picture. Less well-known is the drought that affects large areas of North Bengal.

Getting quality education along with enough expertise in the field is very important for any student's career. The Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management at DIU is such a platform. It connects students directly with the environment by providing deep knowledge and real-life experience. The Department of ESDM not only produces graduates but also creates change makers - which is essential to improve our surroundings as well as our own careers.

I am deeply impressed with the ideas, programs, and activities of the Dept. of ESDM, and I am confident after graduation, when I return to my country, I will be able to contribute to building my nation in a sustainable way.

Studying in ESDM is a blessing to me. I have always been very interested in the environment, climate change and disaster. By studying in this Department, I now have a fundamental understanding of these issues and their underlying causes. Our teachers broaden our outlook, ethics and views. They are not only our teachers but they are our guardians as well as friends. I must say ESDM is all about love and affection. And it's not only my department, it's my family.

Md. Shihabul Shakib

How our natural world works, how to maintain it by making effective environmental policy are the core areas of understanding of the Dept. of ESDM. DIU is the best place to get quality environmental knowledge for great career options and also for better understanding and management of nature. I am really proud to be a part of this family.
